Why Shopify subscriptions don't work in India
Shopify's own subscriptions only charge renewals through Shopify Payments, Stripe, PayPal and a few similar processors. None of these are available to brands selling in India, where payments run through Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU or PhonePe. So global subscription apps can't collect a renewal on the rails your customers actually use. Their usual workarounds are an email asking the customer to pay again, or a manual reorder. Both leak subscribers every month.
StackBack connects subscription renewals to Indian payment gateways. Your customer sets up AutoPay once, on UPI or a card, and every renewal after that is collected automatically.

AutoPay on UPI and cards
How AutoPay works
- 1
The customer subscribes on your store and pays for the first order.
- 2
They approve AutoPay once, in their UPI app or with their card.
- 3
They get a notice 48 to 72 hours before each charge, showing the exact amount.
- 4
The renewal is charged automatically, and a normal Shopify order is created for your team to fulfil.
- 5
If a charge fails, StackBack retries it up to three times before pausing the subscription, so a low balance doesn't cost you a subscriber.
- 6
Customers stay in control. They can pause, skip, swap or cancel from the customer portal at any time.
Tuesday, 12 October
₹1,299 for Cold Brew Coffee will be charged on 14 Oct via UPI AutoPay. Want to skip or pause?
UPI or cards: offer both
| AutoPay on UPI | AutoPay on cards | |
|---|---|---|
| How customers set it up | Customers approve the mandate in their UPI app: Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM or their bank's app. | Customers set up the mandate on a credit or debit card that supports e-mandates. |
| Best for | Everyday consumables like coffee, milk, supplements and pet food. | Higher-value boxes and customers who prefer cards. |
Your gateway, your money
StackBack works with the gateway you already use: Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU or PhonePe. Renewals are charged through your own gateway account and settle with you on your usual schedule. StackBack never holds your money. StackBack is partnered with Razorpay.

Three ways for customers to pay
| Prepaid | Pay-as-you-go | AutoPay | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How they pay | Upfront for every delivery in the plan | A payment link before each delivery | Automatically each delivery, after approving once |
| Best for | Your biggest discount and best cash flow | Cautious first-time subscribers, COD-first buyers | Long-running subscriptions with the least effort for the customer |
| Your discount lever | Any discount you set, e.g. 20% off a 3-month plan | Any discount you set; a strong one is what gets cautious buyers to subscribe | Any discount you set; a strong one keeps renewals running |
Offer all three side by side. StackBack lets each customer pick. Want to accept cash on delivery? StackBack supports COD subscriptions too, though most brands keep subscriptions prepaid to avoid RTO.
What you can run on AutoPay
- Weekly, fortnightly, monthly or custom delivery schedules
- Subscribe-and-save discounts that apply to every renewal
- Bundles and build-your-own boxes on a subscription
- Trials that convert to a subscription (early access)
- A gift on the 2nd or 3rd delivery to get customers past the first renewal
Built for RBI's e-mandate rules
- Every automatic charge is preceded by a notice to the customer.
- Customers can cancel the mandate from their UPI app, their card or your customer portal.
- Charges above the RBI limit for automatic debits (₹15,000 for most product categories) need the customer to authenticate each charge. For high-value boxes, offer a prepaid plan instead.
Ops sees just another order
Every renewal is a normal Shopify order, with your inventory, taxes and shipping rules applied as usual. Your OMS, 3PL and reports keep working exactly as they do today.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Shopify support UPI AutoPay for subscriptions?
Not on its own. Shopify's subscriptions renew only through Shopify Payments, Stripe, PayPal and similar processors, none of which are available to brands selling in India. StackBack adds AutoPay on UPI and cards through Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU or PhonePe.
Which payment gateways does StackBack support for AutoPay?
Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU and PhonePe. Renewals run through your own gateway account.
Do customers approve every payment?
No. They approve AutoPay once. Each renewal is charged automatically after a notice 48 to 72 hours before the charge.
What happens if a renewal payment fails?
StackBack retries it up to three times. If every retry fails, the subscription pauses and you and the customer are notified.
Can customers cancel AutoPay?
Yes, anytime: from the customer portal, their UPI app or their card.
Does the money go to StackBack?
No. Every renewal is charged through your own gateway account and settles with you.
Can I offer prepaid and pay-as-you-go plans alongside AutoPay?
Yes. Most brands offer all three and let customers choose.
Is there a limit on AutoPay amounts?
Charges above RBI's limit for automatic debits (₹15,000 for most categories) need the customer to authenticate each time. Most consumable subscriptions are well below it.
Can I move my subscribers from Seal, Appstle or another app?
Yes. Our team migrates your existing subscribers from Seal, Appstle or other apps, most of which run on recurring invoices, to StackBack right away, with no friction and no gap in their deliveries.
