What a payment really costs on Shopify
Your cost per order is the gateway's fee plus Shopify's third-party fee, which depends on your Shopify plan. On a ₹1,000 order through a gateway charging 2%:
| Shopify plan | Gateway fee (2% + GST) | Shopify third-party fee | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | ₹23.60 | ₹20 (2%) | ₹43.60 |
| Grow | ₹23.60 | ₹10 (1%) | ₹33.60 |
| Advanced | ₹23.60 | ₹6 (0.6%) | ₹29.60 |
| Plus | ₹23.60 | ₹2 (0.2%) | ₹25.60 |
Fees on a ₹1,000 order
Gateway at 2% + 18% GST, plus Shopify's third-party fee
- Basic₹43.60
- Grow₹33.60
- Advanced₹29.60

How to choose
- The ways your customers pay. UPI comes first for most Indian shoppers, and cash on delivery is still one of the options they choose most, alongside cards, net banking, wallets and EMI. All seven gateways take UPI and cards, and COD runs next to your gateway as a Shopify payment method, so plan for both.
- Your real cost. Add the gateway's fee to Shopify's third-party fee. Ask for a quote on UPI, which several gateways price by business.
- Settlement speed. T+1 or instant settlement keeps cash moving if you buy stock weekly.
- Starting limits. Paytm starts Shopify merchants at up to ₹50,000 a month.
- Subscriptions. If you plan to sell subscriptions, pick a gateway with UPI AutoPay and card mandates, and a subscription platform that can charge through it.
The gateways one by one
Razorpay. Takes UPI, cards, net banking (72+ banks), wallets, EMI and cardless EMI. Its Shopify app is listed as "Cards, UPI, Wallet by Razorpay", with no setup or annual fee. Razorpay's Shopify docs say the plugin supports payments only, not Razorpay Subscriptions.
Cashfree Payments. Takes UPI (50+ apps), cards, 80+ net banking options, wallets, EMI and 30+ BNPL options. It has a Shopify App Store app, though it isn't in Shopify's India provider list. Instant settlement arrives within 15 minutes, for a 0.30% fee.
PayU. Takes cards, net banking, UPI, wallets, EMI and BNPL, plus international cards in 150+ countries. Its Shopify app ("1PayU") redirects to PayU to pay, with an onsite card option.
PhonePe Payment Gateway. Takes UPI, cards, net banking across 50+ banks and wallets, with EMI and BNPL. Its listed 1.99% fee is waived during its current offer.
CCAvenue. Takes cards, 58+ net banking options, UPI and EMI. It charges an extra 0.20% for payments through its Shopify plugin and settles weekly. Its subscriptions product covers credit cards and some debit cards.
Paytm Payment Gateway. Takes cards, net banking from 50+ banks, UPI, EMI and Paytm Postpaid, with T+1 settlement. New Shopify merchants start with a limit of up to ₹50,000 a month.
Easebuzz. Takes cards, 50+ net banking options, UPI, 10+ wallets, BNPL and EMI, with T+1 settlement for every payment mode. Pricing is quoted per business.
Why not Stripe or PayPal?
Both appear in Shopify's India provider list, but neither works for domestic sales. Stripe is invite-only for Indian businesses and doesn't take new sign-ups from India. PayPal India can't receive domestic payments, only payments from international customers.
Which gateways can run subscriptions on Shopify?
Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU and PhonePe each run UPI AutoPay and card mandates. Their Shopify apps take one-time payments, though, and Shopify's own subscriptions can't charge renewals through them.
Our pick for 2026: Razorpay. If you plan to sell subscriptions, start with Razorpay. It takes UPI, cards, net banking, wallets and EMI, charges no setup or annual fee, runs UPI AutoPay and card mandates, and it's the gateway StackBack's AutoPay runs on. (StackBack is a Razorpay partner.)
That's the gap a subscription platform fills. On StackBack, the customer buys on StackBack's subscription checkout through your Razorpay account: they pay for the first delivery and set up AutoPay on UPI or a card in the same step, with nothing extra to do. Every renewal after that is charged automatically and arrives in Shopify as a normal order. Prepaid and pay-as-you-go plans work with whichever gateway you already use, and one-time orders can stay on any gateway while AutoPay runs through Razorpay. See AutoPay on UPI and cards and Razorpay subscriptions on Shopify.
Tuesday, 12 October
₹1,299 for Cold Brew Coffee will be charged on 14 Oct via UPI AutoPay. Want to skip or pause?
RBI's rules for recurring payments
RBI's E-mandate Framework, 2026 (21 Apr 2026) sets the rules for AutoPay on cards and UPI:
- Automatic charges up to ₹15,000 need no extra authentication. Above that, the customer approves each charge. (₹1,00,000 applies only to insurance premiums, mutual funds and credit card bills.)
- The customer gets a notice at least 24 hours before every charge.
- The customer can pause, change or cancel the mandate at any time, and pays nothing to use it.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best payment gateway for Shopify in India?
It depends on how your customers pay and what you sell. For most D2C brands, Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU and PhonePe Payment Gateway cover the essentials: a Shopify app, UPI, cards, fast settlement and a recurring-payments product. Compare them on your real cost: the gateway fee plus Shopify's third-party fee.
Is Shopify Payments available in India?
No. India isn't on Shopify's list of Shopify Payments countries, so Indian stores use a third-party gateway.
What does Shopify charge for using a third-party gateway?
2% of each order on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, on top of the gateway's own fee.
Can I offer cash on delivery?
Yes. COD runs as a Shopify payment method alongside your gateway, and it's still one of the options Indian shoppers choose most. StackBack supports COD subscriptions too, though for repeat orders we recommend AutoPay or prepaid plans, which can't be refused at the door.
Which gateway settles fastest?
Paytm and Easebuzz settle on T+1 by default. Razorpay and Cashfree offer instant settlement for an extra fee. CCAvenue settles weekly.
Can I take UPI AutoPay on Shopify?
Yes, with a subscription platform. A gateway's Shopify app takes one-time payments only. On StackBack, the customer buys on StackBack's subscription checkout through your Razorpay account, paying for the first delivery and setting up AutoPay in one step, and each renewal arrives in Shopify as a normal order.
Can I use Stripe or PayPal in India?
Not for domestic sales. Stripe is invite-only for Indian businesses, and PayPal India only receives payments from international customers.
